3 Free Resource Implementations: Design Methods and Launch Flow for Checklists, Diagnostics, Mini-Courses
This is a deep-dive companion article to The Complete Lead Magnet Guide: Why Interactive Tools Convert 50x Better Than PDFs, and What You Should Design Now.
Most SMB owners know they need a Lead Magnet but get stuck on “where do I start.”
This article solves that.
No theory — three Lead Magnet types with full design flow: from topic selection to launch, how much time each type takes, what tools, and how to connect to an Email sequence afterward.
Type 1: Checklist (Fastest to Launch, Fits Every Industry)
The checklist is the “minimum investment, fastest validation” Lead Magnet form. A well-designed checklist takes about 4-8 hours from zero to launch, with conversion typically 8%-15%.
Topic Selection Principles
A good checklist topic meets 3 conditions: users aren’t sure if they’ve done it; doing it right shows immediate effect; it has direct connection to your core service.
A few concrete directions:
If you’re a marketing consultant: “15 quality checkpoints before launching an Email sequence”
If you’re a legal consultant: “12 compliance items every startup must complete in year one”
If you’re an HR consultant: “20 critical actions in a new hire’s first week”
If you’re a health management consultant: “Weekly office health habits assessment: how many did you do?”
Structure Design
A good checklist contains: title (clearly stating the use), 5-20 checkable concrete items (each 1 line, no over-explanation), a one-line “why this matters” next to each item, and a “what your score means” interpretation guide at the end.
Keep length to 1-2 pages PDF, or a webpage that scrolls quickly on mobile. Anything over 3 pages stops being a “checklist” — it’s a report.
Production Tools
Canva: the free tier is enough — pick the “A4 document” template, 30-60 minutes for visual design.
Google Docs: fastest, no visual design but feature-complete. If your audience is B2B professionals, a clearly formatted Google Docs checklist converts no worse than a polished PDF.
Tally or Google Form: if you want users to fill out interactively online instead of downloading a PDF, a form tool lets users see their score immediately after filling — usually converting better than the PDF version.
Launch and Email Connection
Put the PDF on Google Drive, set it to “Anyone with link can view,” copy the link. Set up a subscription form in Mailchimp or ConvertKit, configure auto-reply after subscribe with the Google Drive link attached. Total setup: under 30 minutes.
Type 2: Interactive Diagnostic (Highest Conversion, Fits Service Businesses)
Interactive diagnostics usually have the highest conversion of the 3 types, reaching 25%-40%. The trade-off is slightly higher design complexity — about 1-3 days from zero to launch.
What Businesses Fit Diagnostics
If your service is “helping clients find problems they don’t know they have,” the diagnostic is the perfect Lead Magnet. Consulting, diagnostic-style services, and services that need “needs assessment” before quoting all fit very well.
Concrete examples:
“Your customer service workflow automation maturity diagnostic” (for AI adoption consultants)
“Your factory inventory management risk assessment” (for supply chain consultants)
“Your company’s content marketing ROI diagnostic” (for digital marketing consultants)
“Your employee retention risk assessment” (for HR consultants)
Design Flow
Step 1: define 3-5 diagnostic dimensions. Each dimension represents one facet you assess when serving clients. For example “Content marketing ROI diagnostic” might include: topic strategy, content production speed, publishing consistency, data tracking, business conversion.
Step 2: design 2-3 questions for each dimension, each with 3-4 options, each option mapped to a score (1-5).
Step 3: design result interpretation. Set 3-4 result tiers based on total score (e.g., beginner / intermediate / mature / expert), each tier with 2-3 paragraphs describing current state and next-step recommendations.
Step 4: add a CTA on the result page, e.g., “Based on your diagnostic, we offer a 30-minute free strategy consultation.”
Production Tools (No Code Required)
Typeform: top recommendation, polished visuals, intuitive conditional logic, can show different result pages based on different answers. Free tier: 10 responses/month, paid from $29/month.
Tally: similar features to Typeform, with fewer free-tier limits. Slightly simpler UI but sufficient.
ConvertQuiz (Outgrow): more advanced interactive survey tool, supports score calculation, personalized recommendations, pie chart visualization, but pricier ($25/month+).
Type 3: Mini-Course (Highest List Quality, Fits High-Ticket Services)
Mini-course conversion (10%-25%) isn’t the highest, but the lists it filters are typically much higher quality than the first two. Someone willing to sign up for a 5-day Email course has already proven they have enough problem awareness and willingness to act.
If your service has a high unit price ($3,000+ per close) or needs market education before closing, a mini-course may have the highest ROI of the 3 types.
Course Design
The mini-course’s golden format is the “5-day Email course.” One Email per day, each focused on one specific technique or concept, reading time per email under 3 minutes.
Recommended 5-day theme structure:
Day 1: “What’s your problem now, and why it’s more serious than you think” (problem framing)
Day 2: “The root cause of this problem, and what most people get wrong” (cause analysis)
Day 3: “The core framework/method to solve this problem” (methodology)
Day 4: “How this method plays out in a real case” (case study)
Day 5: “Your next-step action plan, and what you can do if you need help” (action + CTA)
Email length: 300-500 words. Don’t go too long — the mini-course’s purpose is to build a reading habit, not cram all knowledge in at once.
Production Tools
ConvertKit or ActiveCampaign: set the 5 emails as an automation sequence, auto-sending daily after sign-up. Setup time about 2-4 hours (writing time excluded).
Sign-up page: use ConvertKit or Mailchimp’s landing page feature — no separate site needed.
Speeding Up Content Production
Use Claude or ChatGPT to speed up mini-course content:
Feed the course structure and daily themes into the AI and have it generate daily drafts. Then add case studies, adjust voice, and insert specific numbers from your own field experience.
Generating drafts for a 5-day course plus your edits takes about 3-5 hours — 3-5x faster than writing from scratch.
How to Choose Among the 3 Types
If your current goal is “quickly validate whether the audience is interested in a topic,” start with the checklist. Goes live in a week, and you’ll see initial data in 2-4 weeks.
If your business is service-based and needs to help clients understand their needs before selling, build a diagnostic. Development time is longer than a checklist, but the lead quality and follow-up sales conversation efficiency are noticeably better.
If your service has a high unit price and requires educating clients before closing, build a mini-course. Lead volume isn’t the highest, but close rate is usually the highest of the three.
The ideal state is having all three forming a “conversion funnel”: SEO articles drive to checklist (broad list collection), diagnostic filters high-intent leads, mini-course nurtures and converts high-value clients. But if you can only build one now, start with “fastest to validate which topic your audience will trade an Email for.”
What does your target audience ask you most often right now? That question is the best starting point for your first Lead Magnet. To integrate Lead Magnets more systematically into your marketing process, see AIcycle’s Magnet design service.
